Platåberget splits transaction costs, Ethereum tools must adapt

The Platåberget test network is running Ethereum’s future fee model, with two accounting dimensions that can break fixed assumptions in wallets and applications.

The signal

Since 20 August 2026, the public Platåberget test network has been running changes planned for Glamsterdam, Ethereum’s next major upgrade. Its new model separates the cost of computation from the cost of creating persistent state. The network is active and open to developers, validators and block builders.

Why it matters

Ethereum wants to raise capacity without letting the data stored by every operator grow too quickly. EIP-8037 addresses that constraint by charging separately for new accounts, contracts and storage slots. The test turns a specification that remains open to revision into an observable environment.

What changes

Wallets, indexers, fee estimators and applications need to retest their calculations. State-heavy operations can become more expensive, while a simple transfer no longer necessarily follows historical assumptions. Platåberget gives teams time to update their software before the changes reach long-lived test networks and then mainnet.

The caveat

Platåberget uses tokens with no value and cannot prove that the model will remain stable under production load or reach mainnet unchanged. EIP-8037 is still under review, its parameters may move, and Glamsterdam does not yet have a final mainnet activation date.

What to watch

The next evidence will be compatible releases from major clients and tools, followed by Glamsterdam deployments on Sepolia and Hoodi. Developers should also publish measured fee differences for account creation, new storage and simple transfers.
