Hivemapper maps 34% of roads but leaves paid demand undisclosed

Hivemapper gathers road imagery through dashboard cameras and counts Lyft as a customer, but it does not disclose network sales volumes or revenue.

01

The signal

Hivemapper has operated a network of dashboard cameras since November 2022, collecting road imagery, processing it with artificial intelligence and rewarding contributors in HONEY tokens. On 21 August 2026, its coverage page claimed more than 500 million kilometres driven and 34% of the world’s roads captured. Lyft confirmed to Decrypt that it has used data from commercial subsidiary Bee Maps since 2024.

02

Why it matters

The project tackles a real problem: keeping road maps fresh without funding a dedicated global vehicle fleet. Published coverage, a named customer and the 8,037 active devices counted by DePINscan show that both a product and a network exist. They do not establish that commercial demand is growing as quickly as data collection.

03

What changes

Drivers capture roads with dedicated cameras, after which the network validates imagery and extracts mapping information. Since 4 May 2026, the MIP-26 mechanism has let developers order specific areas with Map Credits purchased by burning HONEY. A share of consumed credits then rewards contributors who complete those orders.

04

The caveat

The 500 million kilometres include repeat drives, while the 34% figure is Hivemapper’s own coverage measure. The network does not publish Map Credit consumption, associated revenue, customer concentration or average data quality by region. Mapping supply is visible, but its conversion into paid demand remains hard to verify independently.

05

What to watch

The decisive indicators are weekly Map Credit consumption, unique kilometres refreshed, the number of paid orders and their geographic concentration. Audited figures for network revenue, customer retention and mapping errors would help distinguish a broad collection operation from a durable mapping service.
